Waldemar, Ontario, 1950. Our first year in Canda we were still very Dutch. We had been baptized with the names of our immediate ancestors: Aleida, Hendrika, Derk Jan, Johanna Aleida, Gerrit Jan, Dolf, Willemien, Nellie, Gerda, Johan. The first child born in Canada was given the name Magriet, which in Dutch means Daisy. She was the only child not to be named after someone. The last child was named Dirk, a slight variation on his oldest brother's name. Both were named after their maternal grandfather, in Dirk's case because Opa and Opoe Kuiperij were then visiting Canada.
